Welcome, and a particularly warm welcome if you are an unknown writer with an unpublished story, wondering whether Magbooks would consider your work. Do check out our launch newsletter, posted in October 2003, to discover that you are indeed welcome!

Magbooks currently focuses upon publishing stories that are designed to be read to, and/or read by, kindergarten and primary school aged children. The stories we publish generally feature around 1000 words (less is preferable to more) and these are divided to provide approximately thirty pages of fully-illustrated reading. If you are not able to illustrate your text, it is not a problem, for we have illustrators available to do this. However, it is important for you to be aware of our publishing philosophy before rushing off to the mailbox, as it guides our selection of stories. Here is an extract of our letter to parents which illustrates our aims:

“…Magbooks aims to support your educational desires for your children and reinforce common aspects of importance to all loving parents e.g., inculcating values such as care for others and personal safety, conveyed through enjoyable and entertaining stories. It is not always easy to ‘vet’ the materials your children are exposed to, especially as they become independent readers. It is our desire therefore, to provide all parents with some peace of mind. Our international team of reviewers exists to ensure that all Magbooks are helpful, constructive and have only positive effects upon children. We commit ourselves to this end so that you can relax in the knowledge that whenever your children read a Magbooks publication, you don’t NEED to read it first! In the words of Timon and Pumbaa: ‘Hakuna Matata’!”

If you believe you have written a story that ‘fits the bill’ then please submit it by post to: Magbooks, P.O. Box 71901, Kowloon Central Post Office, Hong Kong, or send via the internet to: theeditor@magbooks.com. Total confidentiality and protection of your work is guaranteed. You can also rest assured that your work will be read, carefully reviewed and contact made after this process has taken place. However, with 17 reviewers based in ten different countries, please know that the process doesn’t happen overnight!
